Against the Compass is finally running tours to Algeria, probably the most demanded destination among our travelers.
This expedition focuses on southern Algeria, exploring the deserts of Tamanrasset and Djanet, which are arguably the most spectacular in the world.
This is a proper adventure, where we’ll sleep under the stars and travel with Tuareg guides, an opportunity to learn about their culture and their deep connection to the Sahara.
You can also combine this southern expedition with our North Algeria tour, for a more comprehensive experience of the country.

Note that we always keep the itinerary flexible, and it may be subject to change, depending on the political situation.
1 – Dec 11th: Algiers to Tamanrasset
2 – Dec 12th: Ahaggar National Park with Assekrem
3 – Dec 13th: Around Hahaggar & Tamanrasset city
4 – Dec 14th: Fly to Djanet and Tassili N’Ajjer National Park
5-7 – Dec 15th to Dec 17th: Desert adventure around Tassili N’Ajjer National Park
8 – Dec 18th: Fly back to Algiers
If you are joining our North Algeria Expedition, we will have a slow morning in Constantine, from where we will drive straight to Algiers Airport.
If you are not part of our North Algeria tour, the meeting point will be Algiers International Airport around 7 pm to catch the flight to Tamanrasset scheduled at 10 pm.
If everything goes smoothly, we’ll arrive in Tamanrasset at 12 am and, after going through some mandatory security procedures, we should be at the hotel no later than 1:30 am.
Overnight in Tamanrasset
Tamanrasset is home to Assekrem, which is the best single site in all Southern Algeria, a dramatic mountain plateau in the Ahaggar Mountains located at 2,780 meters above sea level, where you can witness one of the most spectacular sunsets (and sunrises).
At the top of the mountain, where we’ll watch the sunset, stands the hermitage of Charles de Foucauld, inhabited by a Spanish monk who has been living there for almost 20 years. He doesn’t speak English but does speak French and, of course, Spanish.
While it is not guaranteed, we will try to meet him. He’s very talkative and loves telling stories.
Overnight in Assekrem.
On day 3, we will drive slowly back toward Tamanrasset, stopping at different viewpoints and highlights and, if possible, we’ll also visit a nomadic Tuareg camp along the way.
One thing I particularly love about this area compared to Djanet is that the Tuareg camps are authentic and untouched, so raw that taking photos is not allowed when women are present… and the thing is, there are almost always women there.
We will arrive in Tamanrasset in the evening. We will walk around town, with the possibility of having a few cold beers at a hotel rooftop.
Overnight in Tamanrasset.
The flight to Djanet departs very early in the morning, around 4 am.
Upon arriving at the guesthouse in Djanet, we’ll have time for a few hours of sleep, a shower, breakfast, and then we’ll begin our expedition into Tassili n’Ajjer National Park.
Tassili n’Ajjer National Park is a surreal stone forest of eroded sandstone pillars, natural arches, narrow canyons, and prehistoric rock art dating back more than 10,000 years.
What makes Tassili so special is its variety, the landscape changes completely every few kilometers, so each day offers a different experience, all combined with ancient rock art and occasional herds of camels with their Tuareg shepherds.
We will spend 3 days driving around, sleeping under the stars with our Tuareg team while enjoying the beautiful landscapes.
On day 7, we’ll arrive in Djanet after lunchtime. We’ll have some time to rest at the guesthouse, and then we can explore the city together.
Overnight in Djanet.
The flight back to Algiers is also very early in the morning, around 6 am.
The expedition will finish upon arrival in Algiers.

Accommodation throughout this tour will be a combination of camping and guesthouses, all quite simple, with the only hotel night being the first one in Tamanrasset.
Here’s how accommodation will work day by day:
The only day when you can opt for a private room is the first night in Tamanrasset.
For the rest of the trip, accommodation will be either camping or simple guesthouses with limited rooms, so a single supplement will not be possible.
When camping in Djanet, they usually provide individual tents for everyone, but please note that in these remote areas this cannot be 100% guaranteed. While it is true that on the last tour (10 people) everyone got their own tent, they cannot assure full availability during our trip, as they may be running other groups at the same time.
If you really wish to have your own tent, it is better to bring one with you. The ATC representative will certainly bring his own.
In any case, if you wish to have your own private room on day 1 of the expedition, there is an additional cost of €25.
This tour includes the Letter of Invitation needed to purchase visa on arrival, no need to visit the embassy.
Prices keep changing based on local currency fluctuations, but as of January 2026, these are the prices:

We recommend IATI Insurance.
Why do we recommend IATI?
Against the Compass has been a partner of IATI for a very long time. We personally know their CEO and marketing team, and we collaborate regularly, so in the unlikely event that something happens, we know exactly what to do.
Moreover, IATI Insurance covers all the countries where the FCDO advises against all travel, something that most insurance companies don’t.
You can also benefit from a 5% discount by purchasing it through the link below.
